Hospitalithings
A quiet observation of objects found in places of accomodation
View this workIt all started when I was on a road trip around Utah in December 2017. Traveling through some of America’s most breathtaking national parks, I was struck by a strange contrast: the overwhelming diversity of nature outside, and the soul-crushing sameness of the hotel rooms I slept in each night. Tightly made beds, powdered scrambled eggs at the breakfast buffet, and of course, the miniature shampoo bottles.
That trip sparked a ritual I’ve kept ever since. Every time I check into a hotel room, I photograph the same eleven objects, like the door handle, light switch and the toilet roll holder. Always in a square, no-frills format. Over the years this collection grew to hundreds of photos, sitting dormant on my hard drive until I finally built them a home.
The result is Hospitalithings, a website housing almost 1,000 photos categorized by object type and location. A tribute to the humble objects of hospitality that furnish our temporary homes around the world. Think you’ve spotted a great hotel lamp or a particularly uninspired remote control? Submissions are always welcome.
