De Circulaire

Ten years of my newsletter, commemorated with a crowdfunded time-travelling magazine

De Circulaire is an email newsletter I’ve been writing and editing for over ten years, covering the intersection of art, digital culture and media, with over 1,500 subscribers. To celebrate the tenth anniversary, I launched a crowdfunding campaign for something a little unusual: a one-off print edition.

Not just any magazine, but one from the future. The concept: it’s 2050, and we’re looking back nostalgically at 2025. The design takes its cues from beloved Dutch youth magazines of the nineties like Break-Out and Hitkrant, complete with a horoscope, centerfold, quizzes and a cat puzzle. Alongside the fun, the 68-page issue features serious contributions from writers and thinkers on topics ranging from TV culture to smartphone photography.

Within six weeks, over 250 people donated almost €8,000, successfully bringing the magazine to life. The magazine was sent out in time for the holidays, landing in letterboxes across the Netherlands just before Christmas.
