Hmm.. zal ik voor vijf pond een CD bestellen, met gratis verzending zodat ik iets fysieks in handen heb wat ik overal kan afspelen en kan rippen naar MP3 in 5 minuten, of zal ik het dubbele betalen om minder te krijgen? Oh wacht, ik kan het helemaal niet kopen want voor het downloaden van MP3’s moet ik in Engeland wonen terwijl cd’s overal, voor niks, naar toe worden gezonden. Logisch hoor.
Overigens, play.com (waar dit voorbeeld vandaan komt) heeft wel een hele leuke actie (fysieke cd’s dus, geen MP3’s) met een hele boel goede cd’s voor slechts 5 pond per stuk, inclusief verzending naar Nederland. Die vijf pond word trouwens wel 7,50 euro, ook al staat het pond volgens xe.com lager. Mocht u nog wat tips willen: hier is wat ik allemaal heb overwogen te kopen:
A really unique thing: the Dutch history television program Andere Tijden found the only existing movie footage of Piet Mondrian (or Mondriaan, as we like to call him in Holland). The movie is found at the same time a two-year research project on Mondrian’s last piece, the Victory Boogie Woogie (pictured below), ended. My final project for my study (the European Master of Media Arts at the Utrecht school of the arts) was a short 15-minute movie about Mondrian, so you might imagine i am quite excited about this discovery.
Because after one hour on the train, with 10 programs open, including Photoshop, iTunes and NeoOffice my one-year old MacBook still has a 72% filled battery.

It might be handy to add that most buses only allow punching a ticket on-board after the motor of the bus has been switched on.
Train
In general, we experienced little problems with pre-booking tickets from the train station, instead of via CFR offices, even 24 hours or more before departure. The ticket sale system in general seems to have been modernized a lot at most places.
If you haven’t been looking into Remember the milk you should. It’s a web application for tasks (to-do’s) that allows you to organize all of your tasks in a handy list that you can update from any medium or any place, including sms (using Twitter), desktop applications,web widgets, desktop widgets,e-mail and of course the website itself. It also allows you to make a list of tasks public, which might not make a lot of sense for your own tasks (i wouldn’t want to bother with you with the gigantic list of tasks i still need to do for Wikipedia and Wikimedia-related projects) but is very nice for to-do’s you would like to share, such as my list of movies i still want to watch. Here’s a list of all those movies, presented as a Google gadget using a RSS gadget:
Het spreekt voor zich dat elk bedrijf wil incashen op de huidige gekte rondom het Europees Kampioenschap voetbal. Sommige bedrijven denken echter dat hun klanten wel héél erg dom zijn, zoals kantoorartikelenpostoderbedrijf (is dat een bestaand woord?) Overtoom.
Hierboven een (uiteraard knaloranje) brief met een toeter (leuk om uw buren of schoonmoeder mee te laten schrikken) die ik kreeg met daarbij een FANTASTISCHE ACTIE: je krijgt namelijk 10 procent korting op het gehele assortiment als je jouw GEHEEL PERSOONLIJKE EXCLUSIEVE ACTIECODE invult op hun website. En wat denkt u dat mijn geheel persoonlijke exclusieve actiecode is?
Juist. ‘8EKFAN’, oftwel ‘2008 Europees Kampioenschap Fan’. Denken ze echt dat hun klanten zo achterlijk zijn dat ze niet doorhebben dat die code niet echt persoonlijk is maar gewoon op elke brief staat?
Of wellicht ben ik nou juist… Wacht, ik moet nu stoppen. Ik voel opeens een geweldige drang om een papierversnipperaar te kopen. 10% korting!
Net zoals vorig jaar was er ook dit jaar weer een geweldige boekenmarkt op het Lepelenburg, dit jaar met Tweede pinksterdag in plaats van met Hemelvaart. En ook dit jaar was de oogst weer gigantisch:
Wat u daar ziet zijn in totaal 124 boeken. Die waren trouwens niet alleen van mij, dat waren slechts 50 boeken van die 124. En die staan nu nog steeds op dat tafeltje want ik zou werkelijk niet weten waar ik ze anders kwijt moet.
Het leukste van de boekenmarkt is altijd het einde, waar je voor vijf euro een tas kan kopen die je helemaal vol kan proppen met alles wat je hartje begeert. Heel leuk, maar het nodigt wel uit om ook dingen mee te nemen waar je achteraf niet meer helemaal van kan achterhalen waarom je ze ook al weer meenam:
Tsja, wat moet je hier nu mee? Er is blijkbaar in ieder geval ooit één iemand geweest die het de moeite waard vond om het te kopen, maar waarom? Het plaatje linksonder belooft in ieder geval niet veel goeds: als je dat de eerste keer ziet denk je niet aan lekker gehaktbrood (wat het dus is) maar eerder aan iets dat de darmen produceren en wat er aan het einde uit komt:
Fortunately, Mac Leopard users have a program called Time Machine that makes things a lot easier. But is Time Machine the perfect backup solution? I don’t think so. There are a couple of things that make Time Machine very unsuitable for me:
You need to get a seperate external hard drive that can only be used for Time Machine (and has to be formatted first)
That drive has to be formatted in HFS+, hence, without any (commercial) third-party plugins it’s not readable on Windows or Linux systems
You have to leave your drive on all the time to make sure Time Machine makes backups
You can’t make a list of things you want to have backed up, you can only exclude folders from your complete hard disk
Time Machine makes an exact copy of your hard drive
Especially that last ‘feature’ is very irritating to me. I have an external drive with about 300G of files, including lots of music and video files. My MacBook drive is only 80GB big, so i can never have the complete contents of my external drive on my MacBook. Let’s say i have 10GB of MP3 files, which i backup with Time Machine, then i remove about 5GB of files from my MacBook to free some space. What happens when the next backup round is happening? Exactly, the 5GB of files get deleted from the external disk as well. When i want to play a certain MP3 file from my external drive i now have to ‘restore’ and ‘look back in history’ to find it. Not very user-friendly.
Luckily, there is a very good (free) alternative to Time Machine that does exactly what i want with backups: it lets you specify which folders you want to backup, it doesn’t delete things on the backup drive when you delete files from your original drive, and it’s compatible with any external drive and can even backup files over a network. This piece of software is called rsync. Here’s how to use it.
Sinds enkele dagen is de website online van Peter Rohs, een kunstenaar uit Nijmegen. Ik was verantwoordelijk voor het ontwerp en realisatie van de website. De website heeft een simpele en heldere opzet, met gebruik van Javascript en Flash om de schilderijen full-screen te kunnen tonen en er op te kunnen inzoomen.
Sinds dat ik full-time werk doe ik nog maar weinig freelance klussen, dus ik neem alleen aan wat ik echt leuk vind. Websites van kunstenaars vind ik altijd leuk (ik heb er ook wel eens eerder eentje gemaakt) omdat het onderwerp me meer aanspreekt dan, zeg, het gemiddelde boekhoudkantoor of groothandel in schoonmaakmiddelen. Bovendien kom je vaak problemen en vragen tegen die interessant zijn.
Peter wilde bijvoorbeeld graag een mogelijkheid om de schilderijen op een eigen bepaalde volgorde te kunnen bepalen, in tegenstelling tot alleen op alfabet of op datum, net zoals een kunstenaar bij een tentoonstelling ook zelf een volgorde bepaalt. Vandaar dat er dus in de virtuele galerie naast de standaard sorteeropties voor ‘datum’ en ‘alfabet’ ook een ‘volgorde Peter Rohs’ is, die dus zijn volgorde laat zien.
Ook staan er naast de schilderijen rode en groene stippen, de standaard manier om in een schilderijencatalogus aan te duiden wat al verkocht is en waar een optie op zit. Aardig dus om te zien dat bepaalde conventies en tradities uit de (normale) kunstwereld ook digitaal bruikbaar zijn.
